iRobot Roomba 805 Cleaning Vacuum Robot Review

In the fast-paced world we live in, automation is slowly taking over everyday tasks to help us free up time elsewhere. This includes housekeeping, and thankfully, technology is driving the way forward here to simplify our lives.

Taking over from traditional vacuum appliances, a wireless automated robot vacuum cleaner is becoming a popular choice for households that just don’t have time to do it all. And luckily, they don’t have to.

These smart appliances, the iRobot Roomba 805 vacuum being one, work to clean your home while you get on with other things, or even leave the house entirely. They can be programmed to clean any floor using pre-set programs whilst you are out.

At All Great Vacuums, we have been reviewing various robotic vacuum cleaners on the market so if you are looking to move from traditional cleaners, this review of iRobot appliance should help you make your decision.

About The iRobot Roomba 805

In case you hadn’t heard of them already, iRobot has been making various automatic cleaning robots since 2002, basically revolutionizing how housework is done. Roombas are one of the most highly regarded robotic vacuum cleaners you can find.

Each model offers something different across various price tags. However, all the Roombas are engineered starting with a similar base design: a small rotating disc that uses small wheels to navigate around and clean floors.

There are a few models in the Roomba line and we have previously reviewed the Roomba 650. This Roomba 805 review will take you through this recent model and explain why it stands out from the rest.

The 805 features several patented systems and components to ensure it works efficiently; from tangle-free extractors to stop hair creating clogs and different brush types to capture all the debris and dirt from across the rooms, even around the skirting boards.

You can schedule the robot vacuum to clean up to 7 times a week, so your house is kept spotless without you needing to move an inch. It also has a handy ‘Clean’ button which activates immediate ad-hoc operation in case you need to do a quick once over before guests arrive.

The automatic adjusting function means that it can also operate on lots of floor types without having to manually switch settings between them.

It comes in grey or black colors so that while it sits in view of the room, these sophisticated colors allow it to complement your space.

Main Features

Pre Scheduled Cleaning Times

The cleaner can be programmed to clean up to 7 times a week, so you can automatically schedule it to do the dirty work when you and your family are out of the house every day if you wish. It should also be noted that it also has a ‘clean now’ button for ad hoc cleaning either side of the programmed scheduled times.

Smart Sensors For Navigation

The Roomba 805 uses iAdapt smart sensors to navigate around your home. Using the sensor technology, the cleaner device will automatically leave its docking station at the scheduled times to efficiently clean your home.

One of the most innovative features has to be the Dual Mode Virtual Wall feature. This can be set up easily to create an invisible boundary that the cleaner won’t cross. This way you can confine it to particular rooms or areas and protect any delicate areas. The feature is also used to help it navigate and adapt to surroundings so it won’t fall down stairs or become damaged when left to its own devices.

Works on All Surfaces Effectively

The iRobot 805 works effectively to keep all types of floors clean. From tiles to carpet and hardwood floors – it transitions into each itself. What this means is that you can set it to run through multiple rooms in one cleaning session without having to see over it.

The auto-adjust function means that the cleaning head can change height as it comes into contact with different floors. This is so that the brushes are in just as close contact with each surface type. With a low profile height, it can also get underneath all the furniture and beds too.

3 Stage Cleaning System

The cleaner has the addition of a patented Aeroforce 3-stage cleaning system which operates using multiple components.

Firstly it loosens any dirt stuck to the floors. After that, it will lift the debris. Finally, it will suction it. The system works effectively with smaller particles including those down to 10 microns, as well as larger debris.

Multiple Brushes to Clean All Areas

The iRobot Roomba 805 has several brushes in its toolbox to complete an effective clean. They work together to dislodge and then suction debris and dirt, and the edge-sweeping brush is specially angled to get in all the nooks and crannies. It is engineered to sweep debris away from edges of rooms and can reach around the skirting boards too.

Excellent Suction Power

The AeroForce cleaning system provides a really strong suction power which is up to 5 times the power of the 805’s predecessor. This powerful air power makes it efficient at capturing all sorts of debris, making it an ideal vacuum for pet hair as it is perfect for picking it up.

Allergen Filter Feature

The AeroForce High-Efficiency Filter component captures up to 99% of allergens such as pollen and other minuscule particles. Therefore, it’s a great household cleaner for families who suffer from allergies or hay fever.

Thorough Cleaning Capability

The Dirt Detect sensors are built into this model to let the robot clean, then check its work and recover any missed sections. This way you can expect a more thorough clean.

Unfortunately, this can be a common problem in some robot vacuum cleaners. Luckily it won’t be a problem in this one as the sensors will ensure nothing is missed.

Good Battery Life

The iRobot Roomba 805 is fitted with a lithium-ion battery. This provides it with longer battery life so that it can clean multiple rooms in one charge. Furthermore, the battery is also rechargeable and uses a docking station to charge up.

What’s more is that whenever this unit finishes cleaning on a scheduled program, it will automatically return to this docking station to recharge itself. The charge takes 3 hours so battery life is never an issue for the owner.

What We Like About The iRobot 805

  • Scheduled cleans every day of the week
  • Multi brush technology to remove all types of debris from the whole room
  • Invisible wall technology to create cleaning zone barriers
  • Self-charging vacuum cleaner
  • Good battery life

Minor Drawbacks

  • No Wi-Fi connection unfortunately means no app control
  • A little noisy

Similar On The Market

IRobot has several models of Roomba available. As an alternative model, the Roomba 890 cleaner offers similar features to the 805, but at a higher price tag.

With the higher cost does come added features though. It sports wi-fi compatibility and can be used with the iRobot Home App. This app allows you to schedule and initiate cleaning even when you are away from home. It also monitors the performance of each clean. There is a voice control feature too, and when paired with a home voice control unit like Alexa or Google Assistant, you can activate it by speaking to it.

The Roomba 890 also uses a ‘memory mapping’ feature which uses infrared light to read the space and remember obstacles. This makes for a more efficient cleaning cycle as it will not bump into the same obstacles. Although the 805’s iAdapt navigation does allow for room changes, the 890’s memory mapping feature may be of more value if you have a complicated room layout.

The app and unit itself also have a ‘full bin indicator’ which will let you know when it is full. Should it get to that point without you noticing, the unit won’t proceed with the scheduled clean so it does need to be monitored.

Overall the cleaning performance of the 805 model is similar to the 890. So really the wifi technology and voice control addition is what you are getting for the higher price tag.

In addition to those two, there’s the Roomba 980 model too. Again this features improved technology integrations for a higher price tag.

Final Thoughts

The benefits of the iRobot Roomba 805 vacuum cleaning robot don’t stop with its automated cleaning capabilities. It boasts several patented technology features which make it one of the most advanced multi-floor cleaners on the market.

The multi-brush technology means that all areas of a room, including the edges, are clean and the powerful AirForce suction allows it to do a really great job on pet hair. The self-charging capability means that it doesn’t need to be babysat and will charge itself when needed.

An upgrade would be to go to a model which has more schedule slots and wi-fi capability so the app can be used. However, the 7 schedule slots on the 805 model are usually more than sufficient for most households.
